Frequently asked questions about IIMA
For FAQs about the properties and use of OBMs, see our OBM FAQs
I want to buy OBMs, can you help?
The IIMA DOES NOT trade any metallics. Anyone looking to buy or sell metallics should see our full list of IIMA members to find companies who deal with production and trade in metallics. You can select to view Producer and Trader category members.
What are the benefits of joining IIMA?
There are many benefits of joining IIMA. You will have access to members’ only resources, including industry news summaries 3 times a week along with market, statistics, supply and other reports and presentations throughout the year. You will become a member of our OBM community, with free registration at our Bi-annual Members’ Meetings. You will have a chance to voice the issues for your business. See our membership offering and membership benefits sections on the About IIMA page for details. If you have any further questions, please get in touch.
How much does it cost to join IIMA?
Our membership fees have not risen in over 5 years, as an increase in members has helped us meet rising costs. We are a not-for-profit association. There are 3 membership categories based on the type of company that is joining. The aim is to spread costs fairly. Current prices are:
- Associate member company US$6125
- Trader member company US$8355
- Producer member company US$8355 for those producing less than 1 million tonnes. For greater production, please see our introductory presentation or application form.
Invoices are sent out in January for the year ahead. If a company joins part-way through the year, the fee is pro-rated for the remaining months. It is a rolling membership and resignations must be given 3 months ahead of the new year.
What is the difference between the 3 membership categories?
There is no difference as to the offering, or what members receive based on the category of membership. As a not-for-profit organisation, the aim is to spread the costs fairly based on the size and nature the joining business.
What is the membership process and how long does it take?
- Applicant companies must complete and sign an application form and send to us by email.
- The application is acknowledged and then sent to the Executive Committee for approval.
- Applicants are contacted to confirm the outcome. A welcome letter is sent to successful applicants to confirm all the details in order to put the membership in place and the invoice issued. Once the company information is received by IIMA, new member companies will immediately be given access to all resources.
The process can be completed in as little as a week, but may take longer.

For full details please see our new dedicated Members’ Meeting page.
Can I attend an IIMA Biannual Members’ Meeting although I am not a member?
IIMA Members’ Meetings are intended for our members only. However, prospective member companies wishing to learn more about IIMA and its membership may sent up to 2 delegates for a fee of US$1000 per person. Please get in touch to find out more.
Who are your members; what types of company?
IIMA is unique as an industry association in the breadth of its membership. Although our membership falls into 3 categories of company type (producer, trader, associate), we have companies from the full value chain from mining, OBM production, steel production, recycling by-products and steel, shipping, trading, technology and beyond. This allows us to be the voice for the full OBM value-chain and share insights from across the board. See our Members page for a full list.
