Factsheet update: HBI in the BOF for Steelmaking

Latest update to public resources - see our OBM Factsheets

As part of our public resources, the IIMA Factsheets give concise insight on key aspects of ore-based metallics and the industry. One of our most downloaded Factsheets, The Use of Hot Briquetted Iron in the Basic Oxygen Furnace for Steelmaking, has recently been updated following review by our technical committee.

It provides summary information on when HBI is recommended as part of the solid charge mix, the benefits of HBI in the BoF, and the characteristics that make it beneficial. There is also data on the results of charging HBI as part of the solid charge and comparisons to conventional coolants.

IIMA has a suite of 12 Factsheets covering the fundamentals of ‘What Are OBMs?’, through to specific details on using different OBMs – HBI, Direct Reduced Iron, Pig Iron and Granulated Pig Iron – in different furnaces – EAF, BoF, and BF. To see the full range, including the updated Factsheet 3, check out our Resources page. You may also find our OBM FAQs useful.
