John Atherton has been appointed as Secretary General - Designate of IIMA with effect from January 1st 2019 and will take over from Chris Barrington as Secretary General with effect from April 1st 2019. Having served as Acting Secretary General during 2017 and 2018, Chris will then revert to his former role as Chief Adviser for the balance of 2019 in which capacity he will work with John to ensure an orderly and seamless transition.
John has most recently been Senior Programme Director at the International Council on Mining & Metals (of which IIMA is a member), focusing on product stewardship, health and safety. Prior roles were with the Nickel Development Institute and the International Cadmium Association. He has a Ph.D in Earth Sciences.
John Atherton said: "After spending the last 17 years with ICMM with a focus on material stewardship and health and safety in the mining and metals industries, I'm excited about the prospect of bringing my experience to IIMA and the challenge of adding value across the full spectrum of its activities."
Chris Barrington added: "Having been associated with IIMA and one of its predecessor associations, the International Pig Iron Association, since 2005, it's time to think about retirement and handing over the reins. I'm very proud of what the IIMA team has achieved since its inception in 2011 and am confident that John will be able to build on this and take it to the next level.."
